For installation instructions see INSTALL.

garchiver is an archiver for GNOME. It currently supports the following
formats depending only on the availability of the programs:

Compress and decompress: zip, tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2, tar.Z.
Only decompress: arj, rar.

It has two interfaces, an interface like WinZip, and another like Easy CD
Creator. It supports full drag and drop. Files can be viewed with their
associated program. The files can be sorted as wished. Single files can be
extracted with or without paths.

Now tell us what we've missed. Except for the multiple disk spanning. It's
coming. :-)

This was a class project by 5 students. 4 of which never programmed in
Linux, and for whom Python was totally new. 2 of those never even used
Linux before this!

And that's why we decided on a Python/C hybrid program. Using undocumented
libraries (pygtk, pygnome) and extending it with our own widget
(dir_listing.c). Why do something if you can't torture yourself with it?

Plus it was rather interesting to get automake and autoconf working with
Python. I would love to know if I got it right. :-)
